Crater Copernicus1096 viewsCopernicus is a 93 km (57.7 miles) wide crater located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum. It is estimated to be about 800 million years old and is nearly 3.8 km (2.35 miles) deep (over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon!). Image taken using a 6" SCT at f20 using an Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera.

Mercury Transit 2016828 viewsThe Mercury transit was well underway when this image was taken at 8:17 AM MT on 5/9/2016 from the AAG outreach event at Imago Dei Academy in Alamogordo, NM. The image was taken using a Stellaruve 80ED refractor with a Lunt B1200 Calcium-K module and Imaging Source 41AU02 camera. The Calcium K-line (393.4 nm) shows supergranulation in the lower chromosphere (~1200 km) along with lighter regions indicating magnetic activity. Sunspot AR2542 along with the small disk of Mercury are also visible.

Saturn: The Bringer of Old Age1044 viewsIn the ancient Roman myths Saturn was the god of agriculture, Greeks called Saturn Cronus - this is where we get the idea of Father Time. Saturn takes 29.5 years to orbit the Sun - thereby making it the slowest moving of the visible planets in the night sky. Saturn was 8.976 AU (~830 million miles) distant in this image. Image taken from Alamogordo NM with a Celestron C9.25 at f30 using an Imaging Source 21AU618 color camera and stacked with Registax 5.1 (3206 images) and L-R deconvolution using Astra Image 3.0 SI.

The Sun930 viewsThis image was taken from Alamogordo, NM on 8/8/2015 at 10:49AM MT using a Coronado 90mm SolarMax II telescope and Imaging Source 41AU02 monochrome camera. 688 images were stacked using Registax and a light LR deconvolution was performed before color added using Photoshop. Sunspot AR2396 is seen in the image and has grown by 50% in the last day.

The Black Eye Galaxay1171 viewsMessier 64, often called The Black Eye Galaxy due to the concentration of dark dust in the galaxies center, is found in the constellation Coma Berenices. Images by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that there are many HII and star forming regions in this dusty part of the galaxy. The interstellar medium of M64 consists of two counter-rotating disks, whereas the stars exhibit no measurable counter rotation. The image was a total of 5 h 20 min exposure taken with a TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor and SBIG ST2000xcm CCD camera on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (32 x 10 min lights @ -20 degrees; 20 darks; 64 flats; 64 bias). Sub-exposures taken on April 29th, May 21th, and May 27th 2014. Image acquisition with MaxIm DL 5 Pro; processed with PixInsight 1.8.2.1098 and Adobe Photoshop CC.

Who Needed ISON?1081 viewsWhile Comet ISON evaporated while going around the Sun, Comet Lovejoy (C2013 R1) is putting on a show in our morning sky. It is visible low in the NE before sunrise. This is a 4 min exposure through a 100ED refractor at f7.2 with a modified Canon 1000D at ISO 800. The green color is most likely the result of outgassing of primarily diatomic carbon from solar heating. C2013 R1 was discovered on 9/7/2013 and will make its closest approach to the Sun on 12/22.

The Ringed Planet1289 viewsSaturn is the 6th planet from the Sun at a distance of about 900 million miles. The rings are composed primarily of water ice with particles the size of snowflakes up to house-sized boulders. The Active Sun in Hydrogen Alpha1233 viewsThis image was taken through a 40mm Coronado PST of the Sun on 12/27/2011 at 1925UT. The photograph is centered on the hydrogen alpha emission line at 656.28 nanometers (nm) and shows the chromosphere. Active Region 1384 is the dark region near the center of the photograph. A very large prominence is seen erupting along the rim of the Sun on the right.

Majestic Jupiter1077 viewsJupiter is seen high overhead in Jan 2012 after sunset. This image of Jupiter was taken on Jan 3, 2012 from Alamogordo using a Celestron C6 SCT at f25 (3750mm) and NexImage webcam. Jupiter's moon Io is seen on the left, Europa is on the right. Ganymede is transiting across the face of Jupiter to the lower left. Jupiter has equatorial bands whose colors are generated by churning in its atmosphere. Tinkered with Lucy-Richardson deconvolution to bring out extra detail.
