The Black Eye Galaxay1171 viewsMessier 64, often called The Black Eye Galaxy due to the concentration of dark dust in the galaxies center, is found in the constellation Coma Berenices. Images by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest that there are many HII and star forming regions in this dusty part of the galaxy. The interstellar medium of M64 consists of two counter-rotating disks, whereas the stars exhibit no measurable counter rotation. The image was a total of 5 h 20 min exposure taken with a TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor and SBIG ST2000xcm CCD camera on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (32 x 10 min lights @ -20 degrees; 20 darks; 64 flats; 64 bias). Sub-exposures taken on April 29th, May 21th, and May 27th 2014. Image acquisition with MaxIm DL 5 Pro; processed with PixInsight 1.8.2.1098 and Adobe Photoshop CC.

M 45 and associated Nebulosity1143 viewsMessier 45, commonly known as the Pleiades, is an open cluster found in the constellation Taurus. Messier 45 is surrounded by a dusty reflection nebula, which accounts for its blue coloration, along with some pinkish-red coloration due to an ionized gas component. The small 17.3 magnitude galaxy PGC 13696 can be seen to the right of the star Electra (17 Tau), which is the bright star to the right of center.
The data was previously obtained on the nights of November 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, 2013 with a OSC SBIG STF-8300c camera and Takahashi E-130D f/3.3 Astrograph on a Paramount (Mayhill, NM). Total integration time was 4 hr 20 min (26 x 10 min lights @ -20 degrees C; 20 darks; 64 flats, 64 bias). Calibrated, registered, integrated, and processed in PixInsight 1.8.3.1123.
Some comments on processing: The calibrated, registered, and integrated OSC image was duplicated and the R, G, and B channels extracted. The R, G, and B channels were combined with the Integration Tool to prepare a synthetic luminance (SynL). Dynamic Background Extraction ( DBE) and Deconvolution applied to the SynL image. DBE, Background Neutralization, and Color Calibration was applied to the original RGB image. Both the RGB and SynL images were stretched (Masked Stretch tool). The luminance (“lightness” using L*a*b*) was extracted from the RGB image and the Linear Fit tool was used to match the stretch of the luminance to the SynL channel (SynL as reference). The fitted luminance was added back to the RGB image using the Channel Combination tool in L*a*b* mode. The SynLRGB image was made using LRGB Combine tool. Further processing included noise reduction, multiscale processing to bring out faint structure, color saturation, sharpening, and contrast enhancement.

Messier 82828 viewsThis combined Ha and Luminance image shows the starburst galaxy Messier 82 in Ursa Major with its filamentary outflows of ionized hydrogen. This emission is suggested to be due to stellar winds caused by massive energetic young stars (as well as supernova resulting from their death) being born at a high rate within the galaxy. Total of 9 hr 20 min exposure with a Takahashi CCA-250 f/5 astrograph; Nights of 15, 28 March 2015, 12, 13 Jan 2016, 8, 9 Feb 2016; 2015 Paramount ME, QSI 683wsg, 5 nm Astrodon Ha filter (Lum 11 x 20 min @ - 20 degrees C; Ha 17 x 20 min @ - 20 degrees C), calibrated, registered, integrated, and processed in PixInsight 1.8.4.1195.

NGC 891 in Andromeda1109 viewsNGC 891 is an edge-on spiral galaxy found in the constellation Andromeda. Current estimates put NGC 891 30 to 31 million light-years away from us. A prominent dust lane can be easily seen in the galaxy. Numerous other small galaxies can be seen in the background including a faint galaxy to the right of the central bulge. Image was a total of 8 hrs of combined exposure taken over 6 nights (32 x 15 min lights @ -20 degrees C, dithered; 32 darks; 128 bias; 128 flats) taken with a TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor and SBIG ST2000xcm camera on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount. Image acquisition and guiding with MaxIm DL 6.07 and image calibration, registration, integration, and processing with PixInsight 1.8.3.1123 Ripley (x64).

Andromeda Galaxy1100 viewsThe Andromeda Galaxy (M31) located around 2.5 million light years from Earth is estimated to be the largest galaxy of our local group. This photo also shows Andromeda’s satellite galaxies M32 (NGC 221), left center, and M110 (NGC 205) to the lower right. This image consist of 4 hours of imaging with a Canon 60Da connected to an Orion 80mm refractor mounted on a Celestron CGEM. Stacked with Nebulosity 3.0 and processed with PhotoShop CS6

The Miky Way Galaxy1086 viewsThis shot of the Milky Way was taken from Oliver Lee State Memorial Park on Aug 31, 2014. The glow towards the bottom is the light pollution from El Paso, Tx and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Taken with a Canon 60D at 18mm f3.5 on a Vixen Polarie star tracker.

Heart Nebula (IC 1805)1080 viewsThe Heart nebula (IC1805), an emission nebula is located in the Perseus arm of our galaxy. The nebula spans around 4 times the diameter of the full moon. It is estimated to be 7,500 light-years away from our planet. This photo consist of 3 hours of exposure (3 and 5 min exposures) taken with a Canon 60Da thru an Orion 80mm telescope on a Celestron CG-5. Images were stacked with Nebulosity and processed with PhotoShop CS6.

There are about 2900 stars attributed to the cluster. Total exposure was 3 hours 20 min through a TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor with a SBIG ST2000xcm camera on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (20 x 10 min lights; 15 darks; 64 flats; 64 bias). Lights graded in Images Plus 5.0; processed in PixInsight 1.8 with final levels/curves adjustment in Adobe Photoshop CC.

M17 in narrowband (Hubble palette)907 viewsMessier 17 also known as the Swan Nebula or Omega nebula is located in the constellation of Sagittarius. The Nebula is composed mainly of ionized hydrogen. It is around 5,000 light years away from Earth and is one of the most massive star forming regions in the Milky Way galaxy. This false color image utilizes the Hubble palette that maps Ha to green, OIII to blue, and SII to red. Once the images from each filter are combined it creates an interesting photo. This was my first serious attempt at narrowband imaging and hopefully it will improve. The image consist of around 180 minutes of data from each filter.

The Interacting Galaxies Messier 51 and NGC 51951133 viewsMessier 51 and it's smaller companion galaxy NGC 5195, a pair of interacting galaxies (designated Arp 85), are found in the constellation Canes Venatici. NGC 5195 exhibits tidal trails (stars accelerated into highly eccentric orbits) as a result of this encounter. Total exposure time was 12 hrs 20 min taken over 5 nights (74 x 10 min lights; 15 darks; 64 flats; 64 bias). Image acquisition MaxIm DL; Calibration, registration, integration, and processing in PixInsight 1.8.2 with final adjustments in Adobe Photoshop CC.
