Friday Night at the Orion1426 viewsHere's another shot of the Orion nebula using the 6" SCT at f6.3 with an unmodded Canon Rebel XSi (15min total) done on 3/5/10. The nebula is seen as the middle "star" in the sword of Orion. The Orion Nebula is one of the most scrutinized and photographed objects in the night sky, and is among the most intensely studied celestial features. It is located at a distance of 1,344 ± 20 light years. This is an example of a stellar nursery where over 700 new stars are being formed. Cool stuff!
M33 -Triangulum Galaxy1201 viewsThe Triangulum Galaxy (Messier 33 or NGC 598) is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light-years away. It is the third largest galaxy in the Local Group, a group of galaxies that also contains the Milky Way. M33 is about 60,000 light years across and contains 10-40 billion solar masses. Celestron 6" SCT, unguided on GC-5. Stock Canon Rebel XSi, 21 minutes (needs more time-but forgot to charge battery). Taken at Dog Canyon State Park on the 11/22/08 public star party.
Messier 13-Globular Cluster in Hercules1302 viewsWe were showing a number of globular clusters at our star party events at Oliver Lee State Park. Here is an image of M (Messier) 13 taken with the 6" SCT and a Canon Rebel XSi (15 min). (retouched after I got a new monitor)
Majestic Jupiter1076 viewsJupiter is seen high overhead in Jan 2012 after sunset. This image of Jupiter was taken on Jan 3, 2012 from Alamogordo using a Celestron C6 SCT at f25 (3750mm) and NexImage webcam. Jupiter's moon Io is seen on the left, Europa is on the right. Ganymede is transiting across the face of Jupiter to the lower left. Jupiter has equatorial bands whose colors are generated by churning in its atmosphere. Tinkered with Lucy-Richardson deconvolution to bring out extra detail.
Supernova in M951365 viewsA Type II supernova recently exploded in M95, a galaxy approximately 33 million light years away. Type II supernova are generated when large massive stars "die" and blow up. Heavier elements such as iron, gold, silver and uranium are created in about a second then scattered into the cosmos. The supernova is still about magnitude 13 so its still pretty dim (given its large distance). Imaged using a 6" SCT at f6.3 using an Atik 16IC camera (32 min exposure).
Mare Nectaris/Theophilus crater1402 viewsThe Sea of Nectar (Mare Nectaris) is a small lunar mare located on the eastern edge of the Moon. Theophilus is the prominent lunar impact crater that lies slightly off center of the image to the left. Theophilus is over 60 miles in diameter and is 14,000 feet deep. The small crater in Nectaris near the top of the image is Rosse and is only 7 miles across. Image taken with a 6" SCT at f20 using a DMK 41AU02 camera through a Lumicom 656 nm filter.
Crater Copernicus1094 viewsCopernicus is a 93 km (57.7 miles) wide crater located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum. It is estimated to be about 800 million years old and is nearly 3.8 km (2.35 miles) deep (over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon!). Image taken using a 6" SCT at f20 using an Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera.
The Eagle nebula1621 viewsThe Eagle nebula (M16) found in the constellation of Serpens as seen on May 4 2013. This a compilation of 8 180sec photos taken with an unmodified Canon 60D ISO3200 attached to a Meade 8"SCT with focal reducer and Baader UHC-S filter on a Celestron CG-5 stacked with Nebulosity3 and processed with Photo Shop Elements.
The King of the Planets1201 viewsJupiter is visible in the early morning almost directly overhead in late September/early October. Larger than all the other planets combined, its only 1/1000th the mass of the Sun. The bands visible in the atmosphere are due to upwelling compounds whose exact nature is not quite known. Ultraviolet light from the Sun caused the compounds brown, orange and other colors. Imaged taken using a 5" SCT at f25 (~3750mm) using an Imaging Source 21AU618 color camera (1/45 sec exp, 3316 fr cap/2875 stacked /90% qual)
Veil Nebula1101 viewsThe Veil Nebula is a cloud ionized gas and dust located in the constellation Cygnus. The photo consist of twenty 5minute exposures and three 8minute exposures taken with a Canon 60Da camera and a Meade 8" SCT with a focal reducer on a Celestron CG-5, stacked with Nebulosity and processed with Photoshop CS6. Taken on September 29 2013.
