The brightest star is a red giant (the cluster contains about 35), which is visible in the image near the center of the cluster (magnitude 9.1 – 9.2). The distance to this cluster is about 4500 light-years, although it may be a bit further. Image taken with a TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor and a SBIG ST2000xcm camera at – 20 degrees on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (6.5 hr total exposure; 39 x 600 sec lights, 20 darks, 64 flats, 64 bias; Image acquisition with MaxIm DL and processed with PixInsight 1.8.1.1092 Ripley (x64).

The emission-reflection nebula NGC 1333 in Perseus909 viewsNGC 1333 is a blue reflection nebula with associated star forming regions in the molecular cloud/dust region in the constellation Perseus. The star forming regions contain many new stars less than 1 million years old. Red regions of ionized gas energized by these young stars can be seen in the image. Also seen to the left of the blue reflection nebula is the dark nebula Barnard 205. Image is a total of 5 hrs 45 min combined exposure taken on the nights of 23, 27, and 28 October 2014 taken with a SBIG ST2000xcm camera and TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (23 x 15 min lights @ -20 degrees, dithered; 32 darks; 128 bias; 128 flats). Software: Sky X; Image acquisition with MaxIm DL 6.05; Calibration, registration, and integration in PixInsight; Processing with PixInsight 1.8.3.1123 Ripley (x64) and Adobe Photoshop CC.

William Herschel described it in 1790 as “A beautiful cluster of large stars, very rich, and considerably compressed”. Below NGC 1528 and to the bottom of the image is the emission nebula Sh 2-209. Image was taken with a Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph with a SBIG STF 8300c camera on a Paramount. Image was a combined exposure of 1.5 hours (Dithered 6 x 15 minutes lights @ -20 degrees C guided with a 60mm Baader finder with ST-i; 35 darks; 126 flats; 128 bias). Sub-frames acquired with MaxIm DL 6.07 and calibrated, registered, integrated, and processed in PixInsight 1.8.3.1123 Ripley (x64).

The image was a total of 3hrs 30 min exposure taken with a Takahashi E 180 f/2.8 astrograph and an SBIG STF8300 camera @ -20 degrees on a Paramount (21 x 10 min lights; 20 darks; 64 bias; 61 flats)

A Galactic Rose1218 viewsThe Rosette nebula (Sh2-275) is a large molecular cloud in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula is about 4-6 times the size of the full moon in our night sky. The cloud is mostly comprised of hydrogen gas and is illuminated from the group of hot, young stars near its center. The nebula lies some 5200 light years from the Earth. This image was taken from Alamogordo NM using a 100mm f7.2 refractor and a modified Canon 1000D (XS) DSLR.
