Thor's Helmet in the winter Milky Way1342 viewsNGC 2359 or Gum 4, a.k.a. Thor’s Helmet, is found in the winter Milky Way of the constellation Canis Major (the large dog). This constellation is easily located since Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, is found in Canis Major. Thor’s Helmut is a gaseous nebula illuminated by a very hot Wolf-Rayet star. Image is a total of 2.75 hr exposure (33 x 5 min lights, 30 darks, 64 flats, 64 dark flats) taken with a modified Canon 40D DSLR and Takahashi E-180ed astrograph.

M33 -Triangulum Galaxy1201 viewsThe Triangulum Galaxy (Messier 33 or NGC 598) is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light-years away. It is the third largest galaxy in the Local Group, a group of galaxies that also contains the Milky Way. M33 is about 60,000 light years across and contains 10-40 billion solar masses. Celestron 6" SCT, unguided on GC-5. Stock Canon Rebel XSi, 21 minutes (needs more time-but forgot to charge battery). Taken at Dog Canyon State Park on the 11/22/08 public star party.
