103P_Hartley_2_10_11_10_DSLR_1min.jpg
103P/Comet Hartley 21455 viewsComet Hartley 2, officially designated 103P/Hartley, is a small periodic comet with an orbital period of 6.46 years. It was discovered in 1986. It will be the subject of a flyby by the NASA Deep Impact (EPOXI) spacecraft on November 4, 2010. This image was taken with the C9.25 @ f6.3 with a Canon T2i DSLR (2 ea. 30sec images at ISO 1600) on 10/10/10 at 8:50 PM MT (284:02:50 UT) from Alamogordo NM.

The Comet and the Cluster1168 viewsComet Garrardd (C/2009 P1) is making a pass through the inner solar system. Early Febuary 3rd it came near Messier 92, a globular cluster in the constellation Hercules. Diatomic carbon (C2) is common in comets giving them a green glow. While its too faint for the naked eye, its an easy telescope target. It will make it closest approach to Earth on 3/5 at 1.27 AU. Captured with a Borg 71FL astrograph and Canon T2i (9 min, ISO 1600) from Alamogordo, NM.
NGC_291_in_Cassiopeia.jpg
NGC 2811167 viewsNGC 281 is an emission nebula in Cassiopeia discovered in 1881 by Edward E. Barnard while he was searching for comets with a 5-inch refractor. This image, which needs more exposure time, is through narrowband Oxygen[III] and Hydrogen alpha filters. The Oxygen and Hydrogen gas is ionized by the young cluster of stars in the center (IC 1590). Imaged with a Takahashi FSQ106ED; SBIG ST2000xm; Baader Filters; Paramount.

Who Needed ISON?1110 viewsWhile Comet ISON evaporated while going around the Sun, Comet Lovejoy (C2013 R1) is putting on a show in our morning sky. It is visible low in the NE before sunrise. This is a 4 min exposure through a 100ED refractor at f7.2 with a modified Canon 1000D at ISO 800. The green color is most likely the result of outgassing of primarily diatomic carbon from solar heating. C2013 R1 was discovered on 9/7/2013 and will make its closest approach to the Sun on 12/22.

Comet C/2012 K1 PanSTARRS in Ursa Major1013 viewsAn image of Comet C/2012 K1 PanSTARRS currently in the constellation Ursa Major (May 22, 2014 05hr 09 min 56 sec UT exposures started). The comet has two tails, a brighter dust tail and a fainter ion trail. The image image taken with a TeleVue 140 f/5 refractor and a SBIG ST200xcm camera @ -20 degrees C on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (3 x 5 min lights, 20 darks, 64 flats, 64 bias). Image acquisition with MaxIm DL and processed with PixInsight 1.8.1. 1092 (x64) and Adobe Photoshop CC.
