Markarian's Chain1311 viewsMarkarian's Chain is found in the constellations Coma Berenices and Virgo. The two brightest members are Messier 84 and 86 in the upper right hand portion of the photo. The two galaxies close in proximity below them are known as the "Eyes." The one that is very irregular in shape is NGG 4438 (also cataloged as Arp 120 in Arp's Catalog of Peculiar Galaxies) that as been suggested to be the result of the in-progress merger of two galaxies. 2.6 h (32 x 300 sec) total exposure; Takahashi E-180; Canon 20Da

103P/Comet Hartley 21455 viewsComet Hartley 2, officially designated 103P/Hartley, is a small periodic comet with an orbital period of 6.46 years. It was discovered in 1986. It will be the subject of a flyby by the NASA Deep Impact (EPOXI) spacecraft on November 4, 2010. This image was taken with the C9.25 @ f6.3 with a Canon T2i DSLR (2 ea. 30sec images at ISO 1600) on 10/10/10 at 8:50 PM MT (284:02:50 UT) from Alamogordo NM.

Messier 46 and NGC 24381116 viewsThe open cluster Messier 46 and the accompanying planetary nebula NGC 2438 are found in the winter constellation Puppis. The open cluster contains 186 stars brighter than 13th magnitude and many more fainter stars. The cluster lies in our Milky Way galaxy at a distance of approximately 4480 light years from us. Image is a total of 1 hr 45 minutes exposure ( 21 x 5 min lights @ -25o C; 30 darks; 64 flats; Astro-Physics 130 mm f/8 refractor & 1200 mount; SBIG ST2000XCM CCD camera).

62_Erato 1184 views62 Erato is a large and dark, probably carbonaceous main-belt asteroid. It is a member of the Themis asteroid family.Erato is the first asteroid to have been credited with co-discoverers, Oskar Lesser and Wilhelm Forster, who discovered it on September 14, 1860 from the Berlin Observatory. It was their first and only asteroid discovery.
This image is a stack of 25 5 min exposures creating the line showing it's movement.

The Double Cluster in Perseus764 viewsThe Double Cluster in Perseus, NGC 869 and NGC 884, are bright (naked-eye visible as a hazy patch) relatively young open clusters. Each cluster contains about 300 stars, many of which are blue-white supergiants. Image is a total of 5 hours combined exposure (20 x 900 sec lights, -20 degrees C; 35 darks; 126 flats; 128 bias) taken with an SBIG STF8300c camera; Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph; Astro-Physics 1200 mount; Image acquisition with MaxIm DL 6; processed with PixInsight 1.8.3.1123.

Open Clusters M 46, M47, and NGC 2423 in Puppis731 viewsThe open clusters Messier 46, Messier 47, and NGC 2423 are found in the constellation Puppis embedded in a rich field of Milky Way stars. The small planetary nebula NGC 2438 that appears to be in M 46 is actually not associated with the cluster. M 46 was discovered by Messier in 1771. Smyth describes it as a “A noble, but rather loose assemblage of stars†(Smyth and Chambers, A Cycle of Celestial Objects, 2nd Edition, 1881, Oxford) whereas Webb describes it as a “Beautiful circular cloud of small stars†(Webb, Celestial Objects for Common Telescopes, 4th Ed, 1881, Longmans, Green, and Co ). William Herschel observed the small planetary nebula NGC 2438 in 1786. M 47 was also discovered by Messier in 1771 but not intermediately attributed to Messier due to a mathematical mistake in his coordinates. The cluster was described by Smyth as “a very splendid field of of large and small stars†(under the entry 38 H VIII) and Webb as a “Grand broad group, visible to the naked eyeâ€. This wide field picture was taken with a Takahashi FSQ106ED with focal reducer (f/3.6), Canon 60Da DSLR camera (2.32 arcsec/pixel), and an Astro-Physics 1200 mount on 15 March 2015 in Mayhill, NM.. Total exposure of 1 hour (4 x 15 min lights, dithered; 12 darks; 128 bias; 64 flats); Baader/Astro-Physics guider system; Image acquisition with MaxIm DL; Calibration, alignment, integration, and image processing with PixInsight 1.8.3.1123.

The North American and Pelican Nebulae1042 viewsThe North America Nebula (NGC 7000) and Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) in the constellation Cygnus comprise a vast region of ionized hydrogen. Light obscured by interstellar dust leads to the observed shape of each nebula. The North America Nebula was discovered by William Herschel in 1786. This wide-field image was taken with a Takahashi FSQ106ED with reducer at f/3.6 and a Canon 60Da DSLR at ISO 800 on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount; 5 hrs 45 min total exposure taken on 13 Aug and 15, 17 Sept 2015 (23 x 15 min lights; 12 darks; 128 flats; 128 bias); Sky X and Maxim DL software; processed with PixInsight 1.8.4.1170 using a synthetic light for deconvolution.

Double Cluster in the Perseus arm of the Milky Way1038 viewsThe Double Cluster in Perseus, aka NGC 884 and NGC 869, lies in a rich star field of the Milky Way. A favorite object at public star parties, most observers can pick out an orange star among the bright blue stars of the clusters. Studies suggest that the Double Cluster is relatively young and is approximately 7,500 light-years away. Image is a total of 2 hours exposure taken with a Canon 60Da and a Takahashi FSQ106ED with focal reducer (f3.6) on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount taken in Mayhill, NM on the nights of 23, 30 Nov 2016 (8 x 900 sec lights; 18 darks, 128 bias, 128 flats). Processed with PixInsight 1.8.1195 with final adjustments in Photoshop CC.
