A Tale of Two Stars
|
Here are basic spectra from two familiar stars in the night sky. Vega's spectra is on the left and basically has weak spectral lines based mostly on the Hydrogen Balmer series. This is indicative of a fairly young, hot star. Betelgeuse's spectra is far more complex. We can see spectral lines for Barium, Calcium, Iron and Magnesium and compounds like Vandium Oxide and Titanium Oxide indicative of a star near the end of its life. Data collected with amateur equipment and processed through RSpec software.
