The Active Sun in Hydrogen Alpha1024 viewsThis image was taken through a 40mm Coronado PST of the Sun on 12/27/2011 at 1925UT. The photograph is centered on the hydrogen alpha emission line at 656.28 nanometers (nm) and shows the chromosphere. Active Region 1384 is the dark region near the center of the photograph. A very large prominence is seen erupting along the rim of the Sun on the right.

Hydrogen alpha image of Messier 81433 viewsM8, an emission nebula, is found in the constellation Sagittarius. A significant portion of it's composition is hydrogen, which emitts light due to the excitation of the hydrogen atoms from radiation coming from the embedded stars in the nebula. A particular wavelenght of this emission, Ha, was imaged using a narrowband filter and assigned a red color (TeleVue 85 refractor; 0.8 reducer/fattener; SBIG ST-2000 CCD; 25 x 5 min lights; 30 darks; 41 flats).

Supernova in Messier 1011300 viewsA supernova has appeared in the galaxy designed Messier 101. A supernova is essentially a star at the end of its lifetime that has exploded. This particular type of supernova is a type Ia, which is assumed to be due to the destruction of a white dwarf in a binary star system. The supernova can be seen in the image as the brightest "star" within the galaxy; located to the left of the center of the galaxy.

Helix Nebula1252 viewsThe Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), aka Helical Nebula or Sunflower Nebula, is a planetary nebula found in the constellation Aquarius. Despite it's designation as a "planetary" nebula, it has no relation to a planet. The term planetary nebula came from the "appearance as a planetary disk" in early telescopes. Planetary nebula are indeed the expelled gaseous remains of aging stars. The image is a total exposure of 1 hr 40 min (20 X 300 sec) taken with a Takahashi E-180 and Canon 20Da DSLR camera.

Orion Nebula827 viewsWide-field photo of the Orion Nebula (M42 and M43) along with the Running Man (NGC-1977) taken with a Takahashi E-180 astrograph and a Canon 20Da DSLR camera. The total exposure was 25 minutes (5 X 300 seconds); calibrated, aligned, and stacked in Images Plus and processed in Photoshop CS4.

IC 410 and the Tadpoles1146 viewsIC 410 in the constellation Auriga is a nebula associated with the open cluster NGC 1893. On close examination, the two "tadpoles" can be found "swimming in the gaseous nebula." IC 410 imaged with a Canon 20Da DSLR and Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph on a Paramount.

The Soap Bubble in the Nebulosity of Cygnus753 viewsThe Soap Bubble Nebula, or PN G755.5+1.7, is found in the constellation Cygnus. The Soap Bubble is likely a symmetric planetary nebula, which is the expanding shell of ionized gas ejected from a star late in its lifetime. The faint nebula was discovered relatively recently in 2008 on photographs of the Cygnus region. Image was a total of 17 hr 20 min exposure taken with a Takahashi CCA-250 f/5 astrograph with a QSI683wsg camera (Astrodon Gen2 H-alpha filter 5 nm; O[III] 3 nm) on a Paramount ME on the nights of 2, 4, 5, 21, 25, 26, 29, 30 October 2016 in Mayhill, NM (26 x 1200 sec H-alpha lights @ -20 degrees; 26 x 1200 sec O[III] lights @ -20 degrees; 23 darks; 128 flats of each filter; 126 bias; processed in PixInsight; color assigned in SHO-AIP Red = 90 % H-alpha; G = 10% H-alpha and 100% O[III]; Blue = 100% O[III]).

A Young Open Cluster in a Nebulous Complex 829 viewsThe open cluster NGC 6910 is found in the nebulous emission complex IC 1318, which is located in the constellation Cygnus. As NGC 6910 is near the galactic plane, there is a significant amount of interstellar dust in the area. Indeed, the blue spectroscopic star HIP 100548 (aka SAO 49563) is rendered yellowish white due to the light scattering by the interstellar dust. Estimated distance of the star cluster and nebula is 2,000 to 5,000 light years. Image was taken with a 12.5 inch at f/9 RCOS astrograph with a SBIG STF8300c CCD camera on a Paramount ME in Mayhill, NM on the nights of 4, 5, 21, 25, 29, ant 30 Oct 2016. Total of 14 hr 20 min exposure (43 x 1200 sec lights at -15 degrees C; 18 darks; 128 bias; 128 flats); image acquisition MaxIm DL 6; calibration, registration, integration, and processing in PixInsight Ripley (x64)

NGC 1491632 viewsNGC 1491 is an emission nebula found in the constellation of Perseus. It is located over 10,000 light-years from Earth and it forms part of the larger Sharpless 206 nebula. This image consists of over 5 hours of imaging with a Canon 60Da camera, 8” TPO telescope on a Celestron CGE Pro mount. Calibrated, stacked, and processed with PixInsight 1.8

The Milky Way at Sagittarius636 viewsA close-up into the Milky Way galaxy near the constellation of Sagittarius. M8, M20, M17 and many clusters are distinguishable among the dust lanes and dark regions of the Milky Way. Taken from Valley of Fires Recreation Area near Carrizozo, NM on September 24, 2016. The image consists of 20 x 2 minutes exposures utilizing a Canon 60Da at f6.3, 70mm focal length, and ISO1600. Stacked with Nebulosity 4 and processed with PixInsight 1.8.

NGC 246 (The Skull Nebula)694 viewsNGC 246 is a small planetary nebula in the constellation of Cetus. The nebula was discovered in 1785 by William Herschel and gets its nickname due to its resemblance to a human skull. NGC246’s central star, is a white dwarf that is entering its final phase of evolution becoming a hot white dwarf. This image was taken on Oct 23, 2016 with an 8" TPO RC telescope, Canon 60Da camera, on a Celestron CGE Pro mount. Stacked with Nebulosity 4 and edited with PixInsight 1.8
