Crater Copernicus875 viewsCopernicus is a 93 km (57.7 miles) wide crater located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum. It is estimated to be about 800 million years old and is nearly 3.8 km (2.35 miles) deep (over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon!). Image taken using a 6" SCT at f20 using an Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera.

Galaxies in Virgo and Coma Berenices1323 viewsMany galaxies are seen in the constellations Virgo and Coma Berenices. To the bottom left is seen the spiral galaxy Messier 88, in which young stars and active star formation are present. In the lower right corner is seen the elliptical galaxy Messier 87, whose golden brown coloration is suggestive of old stars and little if any star formation. In the upper right hand quadrant is a pair of galaxies, NGC 4438 and 4435, aka the Eyes or Arp 120. Exposure is a total of 13 hr 35 min (163 X 5 min).

In the spiral arms of the galaxy are many blue areas of active star formation as well as red HII regions. The image is a total combined exposure of 5 hours 25 minutes (65 x 5 min lights, 30 darks, 64 flats) with an SBIG ST2000XCM camera and an Astro-Physics 130mm f/8 refractor.

Photographed with a Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 and Canon 20Da DSLR on a Paramount (Ten 5-minute exposures at ISO 800; calibrated, aligned, combined and processed in Images Plus V 3.80 (DDP stretch) followed by Adobe Photoshop CS4).

NGC1973632 viewsNGC 1973 (Running Man Nebula) is a reflection nebula associated with Orion’s molecular cloud. The nebula is located just .5 degree north of the Great Orion Nebula and 1,500 light years away from Earth. The blue color derives from the interstellar dust reflecting the light from the surrounding young stars. The image consists of 75 x 5min exposures taken with a Canon 60Da and TPO 8” RC telescope mounted on a Celestron CGE Pro mount. Images were stacked with Nebulosity 4 and processed with PixInsight 1.8

Astronomers believe NGC891 looks similar to the Milky Way if viewed edge-on. This image consist of 5 hours of exposure with a Canon 60Da camera, 8” TPO RC telescope, and Celestron CGE Pro mount. Processed in PixInsight 1.8.

The Crab Nebula in Oxygen[III] and Hydrogen-alpha Emission 822 viewsMessier 1, the Crab Nebula, is a supernova remnant found in the constellation Taurus. M1 was discovered by John Bevis in 1731 (independently discovered by Charles Messier in 1758). Admiral Smyth describes M1 as a “large nebula, pearly white” and of “oval form” in his Cycle of Celestial Objects (2nd edition, page 145). This bi-color image is a total of 17 hrs 20 min exposure using a Takahashi CCA-250 f/5 astrograph and a QSI683wsg CCD camera (Astrodon Gen 2 filters; H-alpha 5 nm; O[III] 3 nm) on a Paramount ME (26 x 1200 sec O[III] lights, 26 x 1200 sec H-alpha lights; 21 darks, 126 bias, and corresponding flats and flat darks). Color assignment H-alpha = red; 15:83 H-alpha:O[III] = green; O[III] = blue; processed in PixInsight 1.8.4.1195.

A GLOBULAR CLUSTER IN LYRA770 viewsThe globular cluster Messier 56 is found in the part of Milky Way that runs through the constellation Lyra. Admiral Smyth describes M 56 as “a globular cluster in a splendid field” in his “A Cycle of Celestial Objects” (2nd Ed, 1881). The image was taken on 15 June 2016 in Mayhill, NM with a 12.5” RCOS f/9 telescope operating at f/5.95 (Astro-Physics CCDT67 reducer) and a SBIG STF8300c camera mounted on a Paramount ME. Exposure was a total of 1 hr 40 min (5 x 20 min lights @ -15 degrees C; 40 darks; 128 flats; 128 bias). Calibrated, registered, integrated, and processed in PixInsight 1.8.4.1195 Ripley (x64).

This emission is suggested to be due to stellar winds caused by massive energetic young stars (as well as supernovae resulting from their death) being born at a high rate within the galaxy. Total of 18 hrs exposure with a Takahashi CCA-250 f/5 astrograph; Nights of 15, 24, 28 March 2015; 12, 13 Jan 2016; 8, 9 Feb 2016: 2015 Paramount ME, QSI683wsg, Astrodon Gen2 filters (Ha 5 nm); (Lum 16 x 20 min; Ha 17 x 20 min; R 7 x 20 min; G 7 x 20 min; B 7 x 29 min all @ - 20 degrees C), calibrated, registered, integrated, and processed in PixInsight 1.8.4.1195 (x 64).

NGC 2264697 viewsNGC 2264 in the constellation of Monoceros consists of the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster. The Cone Nebula is an H II region and a dark absorption nebula. The Christmas Tree cluster (upside down) is the open cluster above the nebula. The bright star towards the top center (S Mon) represents the center of the trunk while HD 47887 above the cone nebula, represents the top. Not officially part of NGC 2264 is the Fox Fur Nebula, the blue and red furry like area next to S Mon. 200 min total exposure.

Crab Nebula (M1)706 viewsThe Crab Nebula (M1) is a supernova remnant in the constellation of Taurus. In 1731 John Bevis found that M1 corresponded with the bright supernova recorded by Chinese astronomers in 1054 AD as a star bright enough to be seen during the day. The image consists of 47 exposures taken with a Canon 60Da camera, a TPO RC telescope and a Celestron CGEM mount. Exposures were stacked with Nebulosity and processed with PixInsight 1.8.
