The Owl Nebula964 viewsThe Owl Nebula (Messier 97, or M97) is a planetary nebula in the Big Dipper about 2600 light years away. The nebula formed about 6,000 years ago when a Sun-like star died. The nebula gets its name from the owl-like "eyes". This narrowband image consists Hydrogen alpha, Hydrogen beta and Oxygen emission lines captured through a 120mm f/8.3 refractor and Atik 314L+ camera (109 min total exposure).
A Galactic Rose962 viewsThe Rosette nebula (Sh2-275) is a large molecular cloud in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula is about 4-6 times the size of the full moon in our night sky. The cloud is mostly comprised of hydrogen gas and is illuminated from the group of hot, young stars near its center. The nebula lies some 5200 light years from the Earth. This image was taken from Alamogordo NM using a 100mm f7.2 refractor and a modified Canon 1000D (XS) DSLR.
The Lagoon Nebula908 viewsThe Lagoon Nebula (cMessier 8 or M8, and as NGC 6523) is a giant interstellar cloud in the constellation Sagittarius. The Lagoon Nebula is estimated to be between 4,000-6,000 light years from the Earth. The nebula contains a number of Bok globules (dark, collapsing clouds of proto-stellar material). Imaged using a 100mm F7.2 refractor (112 min) and Hap Griffin modified Canon 1000D DSLR (ISO 800).
Saturn907 viewsSaturn taken with a Takahashi Mewlon 300 Dakin 2.4x barlow and an Imaging Source DBK21AU618 OSC camera from Mayhill NM (2600 stacked images using Registax 5.1). Saturn lies about 900 million miles from Earth. It's disk measured 17.9 arc sec at its equator (with rings 40.6")
Mars and Saturn 2012902 viewsHere is a collage of Mars and Saturn from 2/19/2012. Mars nearest approach to Earth occurs in early March 2012, however it will be almost 60 million miles from Earth (making its disk appear small compared to recent years). Saturn will reach opposition in mid-April 2012, so the disk will be growing larger with each day. Come to our Spring events to see Saturn for yourself !
The Comet and the Cluster898 viewsComet Garrardd (C/2009 P1) is making a pass through the inner solar system. Early Febuary 3rd it came near Messier 92, a globular cluster in the constellation Hercules. Diatomic carbon (C2) is common in comets giving them a green glow. While its too faint for the naked eye, its an easy telescope target. It will make it closest approach to Earth on 3/5 at 1.27 AU. Captured with a Borg 71FL astrograph and Canon T2i (9 min, ISO 1600) from Alamogordo, NM.

Yerkes Observatory878 viewsYerkes Observatory was established in 1897 in Williams Bay, Wisconsin and is considered the birthplace of modern astrophysics. The observatory is operated by the University of Chicago and houses a 40 inch Alvin Clark & Sons refractor telescope. The telescope remains the largest refractor in the world.
Crater Copernicus861 viewsCopernicus is a 93 km (57.7 miles) wide crater located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum. It is estimated to be about 800 million years old and is nearly 3.8 km (2.35 miles) deep (over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon!). Image taken using a 6" SCT at f20 using an Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera.
More Calcium-K852 viewsThis image from Jan 17,2012 shows active regions 1401/1402 in Calcium K (393.4 nanometers) as they rotated into view. This region recently threw off a coronal mass ejection (CME) that impacted Earth's magnetic field on Jan 22, 2012 creating auroras at the northern latitudes. Majestic Jupiter850 viewsJupiter is seen high overhead in Jan 2012 after sunset. This image of Jupiter was taken on Jan 3, 2012 from Alamogordo using a Celestron C6 SCT at f25 (3750mm) and NexImage webcam. Jupiter's moon Io is seen on the left, Europa is on the right. Ganymede is transiting across the face of Jupiter to the lower left. Jupiter has equatorial bands whose colors are generated by churning in its atmosphere. Tinkered with Lucy-Richardson deconvolution to bring out extra detail.
Who Needed ISON?844 viewsWhile Comet ISON evaporated while going around the Sun, Comet Lovejoy (C2013 R1) is putting on a show in our morning sky. It is visible low in the NE before sunrise. This is a 4 min exposure through a 100ED refractor at f7.2 with a modified Canon 1000D at ISO 800. The green color is most likely the result of outgassing of primarily diatomic carbon from solar heating. C2013 R1 was discovered on 9/7/2013 and will make its closest approach to the Sun on 12/22.
