Majestic Jupiter945 viewsJupiter is seen high overhead in Jan 2012 after sunset. This image of Jupiter was taken on Jan 3, 2012 from Alamogordo using a Celestron C6 SCT at f25 (3750mm) and NexImage webcam. Jupiter's moon Io is seen on the left, Europa is on the right. Ganymede is transiting across the face of Jupiter to the lower left. Jupiter has equatorial bands whose colors are generated by churning in its atmosphere. Tinkered with Lucy-Richardson deconvolution to bring out extra detail.

Venus Transit - Calcium K1449 viewsThe AAG and Oliver Lee State Park hosted a Venus transit event on 6/5/2012 to witness this "once in a lifetime event". This photo was taken using a Stellaruve SV80ED refractor, a Lunt B1200 Calcium-K module and Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera at the event. Venus and Earth are roughly the same size- so this gives a good approximation of the size of the Sun compared to the Earth. Multiple sunspot regions also speckle the image. The AAG also had white light and hydrrogen-alpha telescopes for the crowd to witness the event.

Partial Lunar Eclipse 6/4/20121347 viewsOrbital dynamics of the Earth-Moon system are on display with the latest two pictures on our gallery page. On May 20th the Moon passed between the Sun and the Earth at its furthest point and created an annular solar eclipse. Steve caught a beautiful image from Albuquerque. Two weeks later on the morning of June 4th, the Moon passed partially through the shadow of the Earth creating a partial lunar eclipse. Venus will transit the Sun on the afternoon of June 5th.

Venus transit in white light1441 viewsThis image of the Venus transit was taken in white light (compare to image on right) through a Baader solar filter. Image taken with a TeleVue 3” f/7.4 Oracle refractor using a Baader flat field Barlow to extend the focal length (approximately f/27) and a Canon 50D DSLR @ ISO 400. Three exposures of 1/400 sec were combined and processed in Image Plus 4.50 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Jupiter860 viewsOn 1/23/2015 the shadows of Io, Callisto, and Europa were visible from Earth as they transit across Jupiter. This photo shows Io's shadow (someone correct me if I am wrong) as it transited across the gas giant. The image consist of 2,000 video frames taken with an Imaging Source camera and a Meade 8" SCT mounted on a Celestron CGEM mount. Frames were stacked with Registax6 and processed with PhotoShop CS6 and Steve's touch.

Mercury Transit 2016712 viewsThe Mercury transit was well underway when this image was taken at 8:17 AM MT on 5/9/2016 from the AAG outreach event at Imago Dei Academy in Alamogordo, NM. The image was taken using a Stellaruve 80ED refractor with a Lunt B1200 Calcium-K module and Imaging Source 41AU02 camera. The Calcium K-line (393.4 nm) shows supergranulation in the lower chromosphere (~1200 km) along with lighter regions indicating magnetic activity. Sunspot AR2542 along with the small disk of Mercury are also visible.
