M33 -Triangulum Galaxy988 viewsThe Triangulum Galaxy (Messier 33 or NGC 598) is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light-years away. It is the third largest galaxy in the Local Group, a group of galaxies that also contains the Milky Way. M33 is about 60,000 light years across and contains 10-40 billion solar masses. Celestron 6" SCT, unguided on GC-5. Stock Canon Rebel XSi, 21 minutes (needs more time-but forgot to charge battery). Taken at Dog Canyon State Park on the 11/22/08 public star party.

Messier 13-Globular Cluster in Hercules1071 viewsWe were showing a number of globular clusters at our star party events at Oliver Lee State Park. Here is an image of M (Messier) 13 taken with the 6" SCT and a Canon Rebel XSi (15 min). (retouched after I got a new monitor)

Moon: Tyco/Clavius crater region1310 viewsAn image of the Tyco/Clavius region taken from Alamogordo. Tyco (53 miles in diameter, near center of image) is a relatively young crater based on samples from Apollo 17. Clavius (140 miles in diameter, lower center) is a much older crater with several smaller craters inside of it. Image taken using the C9.25 with a Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera and Lumicon H-alpha filter. This picture is surprisingly similiar to one in the Sep/Oct 2011 SkyNews (p.36).

Milky Way Over Alamogordo1788 viewsThis is a widefield image of the Milky Way taken on 4/29/11 from within the city limits of Alamogordo using a Canon T2i Rebel DSLR on a CGE mount. Visible near the center of the image is Messier 8 (M8, or the Lagoon Nebula), M20 (Trifid Nebula), rich star region M24, open clusters M21, M23 and M25. Globular cluster M22 is visible near the bottom center. To see these objects and more for yourself - come out to our events at Oliver Lee State Park !

The Comet and the Cluster903 viewsComet Garrardd (C/2009 P1) is making a pass through the inner solar system. Early Febuary 3rd it came near Messier 92, a globular cluster in the constellation Hercules. Diatomic carbon (C2) is common in comets giving them a green glow. While its too faint for the naked eye, its an easy telescope target. It will make it closest approach to Earth on 3/5 at 1.27 AU. Captured with a Borg 71FL astrograph and Canon T2i (9 min, ISO 1600) from Alamogordo, NM.

The Active Sun in Hydrogen Alpha1016 viewsThis image was taken through a 40mm Coronado PST of the Sun on 12/27/2011 at 1925UT. The photograph is centered on the hydrogen alpha emission line at 656.28 nanometers (nm) and shows the chromosphere. Active Region 1384 is the dark region near the center of the photograph. A very large prominence is seen erupting along the rim of the Sun on the right.
Vega_Betelgeuse_spectra.jpg
A Tale of Two Stars1222 viewsHere are basic spectra from two familiar stars in the night sky. Vega's spectra is on the left and basically has weak spectral lines based mostly on the Hydrogen Balmer series. This is indicative of a fairly young, hot star. Betelgeuse's spectra is far more complex. We can see spectral lines for Barium, Calcium, Iron and Magnesium and compounds like Vandium Oxide and Titanium Oxide indicative of a star near the end of its life. Data collected with amateur equipment and processed through RSpec software.

Venus Transit - Calcium K1356 viewsThe AAG and Oliver Lee State Park hosted a Venus transit event on 6/5/2012 to witness this "once in a lifetime event". This photo was taken using a Stellaruve SV80ED refractor, a Lunt B1200 Calcium-K module and Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera at the event. Venus and Earth are roughly the same size- so this gives a good approximation of the size of the Sun compared to the Earth. Multiple sunspot regions also speckle the image. The AAG also had white light and hydrrogen-alpha telescopes for the crowd to witness the event.

Partial Lunar Eclipse 6/4/20121254 viewsOrbital dynamics of the Earth-Moon system are on display with the latest two pictures on our gallery page. On May 20th the Moon passed between the Sun and the Earth at its furthest point and created an annular solar eclipse. Steve caught a beautiful image from Albuquerque. Two weeks later on the morning of June 4th, the Moon passed partially through the shadow of the Earth creating a partial lunar eclipse. Venus will transit the Sun on the afternoon of June 5th.

Mare Nectaris/Theophilus crater1167 viewsThe Sea of Nectar (Mare Nectaris) is a small lunar mare located on the eastern edge of the Moon. Theophilus is the prominent lunar impact crater that lies slightly off center of the image to the left. Theophilus is over 60 miles in diameter and is 14,000 feet deep. The small crater in Nectaris near the top of the image is Rosse and is only 7 miles across. Image taken with a 6" SCT at f20 using a DMK 41AU02 camera through a Lumicom 656 nm filter.
Rho_Ophiuchus_region_2012_05_16_71FL_XS_36min_iso800.jpg
Antares, M4 and the Rho Oph cloud1234 viewsAntares is the bright star at the lower left of the image. It is over 700 times the diameter of our Sun. Globular cluster Messier 4 is seen on the lower right. The Rho Ophiuchus cloud complex is the closest star forming region to our solar system (~430 lght years away). The cloud complex is much larger than can fit in this image. Blue reflection nebula IC 4605 seen about mid-left, and IC4603 seen middle-top are created by interstellar dust. Borg 71FL astrograph with a modified Canon XS DSLR 36min exp.

IC 1275 region1242 viewsIC (Index Catalog) 1275 is an emission nebula located within a rich star field in the constellation Sagittarius. The red color is due to ionized hydrogen gas (HII regions) being excited by nearby stars. Image taken through a Borg 71FL and modified Canon XS DSLR (two hour exposure, stacked with Nebulosity and processed in Photoshop).
