Andromeda Galaxy1100 viewsThe Andromeda Galaxy (M31) located around 2.5 million light years from Earth is estimated to be the largest galaxy of our local group. This photo also shows Andromeda’s satellite galaxies M32 (NGC 221), left center, and M110 (NGC 205) to the lower right. This image consist of 4 hours of imaging with a Canon 60Da connected to an Orion 80mm refractor mounted on a Celestron CGEM. Stacked with Nebulosity 3.0 and processed with PhotoShop CS6

AR2615980 viewsActive Region 2615 has rotated into view on the Sun on 12 Dec 2016. It measures some 68,000 miles (110,00 km) end to end. Image taken using a Stellarvue 80mm f7 refractor, Daystar sodium Quark at 588.995 nm (D1 line) and Imaging Source 41AU02 camera. Processed using Registax 6.0 Astra Image 3.0SI (for Lucy Richardson deconvolution) and Photoshop V7.0.1.
Mercury Transit 2016828 viewsThe Mercury transit was well underway when this image was taken at 8:17 AM MT on 5/9/2016 from the AAG outreach event at Imago Dei Academy in Alamogordo, NM. The image was taken using a Stellaruve 80ED refractor with a Lunt B1200 Calcium-K module and Imaging Source 41AU02 camera. The Calcium K-line (393.4 nm) shows supergranulation in the lower chromosphere (~1200 km) along with lighter regions indicating magnetic activity. Sunspot AR2542 along with the small disk of Mercury are also visible.
Massive Filament on the Sun931 viewsA dark filament of magnetism in the sun's southern hemisphere has curled upon itself to form a circle of gargantuan proportions. The circumference of the ring is almost a million kilometers (600,000 miles)! Magnetic filaments are very often unstable, and have a tendency to collapse. Filaments crashing to the surface of the sun can cause of a type of explosion called a Hyder flare. Any flare from this filament could be extra-energetic as it releases the tension stored in its million-km coil. M17 in narrowband (Hubble palette)907 viewsMessier 17 also known as the Swan Nebula or Omega nebula is located in the constellation of Sagittarius. The Nebula is composed mainly of ionized hydrogen. It is around 5,000 light years away from Earth and is one of the most massive star forming regions in the Milky Way galaxy. This false color image utilizes the Hubble palette that maps Ha to green, OIII to blue, and SII to red. Once the images from each filter are combined it creates an interesting photo. This was my first serious attempt at narrowband imaging and hopefully it will improve. The image consist of around 180 minutes of data from each filter.
Saturn: The Bringer of Old Age1044 viewsIn the ancient Roman myths Saturn was the god of agriculture, Greeks called Saturn Cronus - this is where we get the idea of Father Time. Saturn takes 29.5 years to orbit the Sun - thereby making it the slowest moving of the visible planets in the night sky. Saturn was 8.976 AU (~830 million miles) distant in this image. Image taken from Alamogordo NM with a Celestron C9.25 at f30 using an Imaging Source 21AU618 color camera and stacked with Registax 5.1 (3206 images) and L-R deconvolution using Astra Image 3.0 SI.
The Sun and Sunspot AR2297963 viewsThe Sun as of March 14, 2015. This image shows sunspot AR2297 (white area top-right) which emitted several M class solar flares. The image consist of 3,000 frames taken with an ImagingSource DBK camera, 60mm Solar Max telescope double stacked, Meade LX80 mount, stacked with RegiStax and processed with PhotoShop CS6.
The Sun930 viewsThis image was taken from Alamogordo, NM on 8/8/2015 at 10:49AM MT using a Coronado 90mm SolarMax II telescope and Imaging Source 41AU02 monochrome camera. 688 images were stacked using Registax and a light LR deconvolution was performed before color added using Photoshop. Sunspot AR2396 is seen in the image and has grown by 50% in the last day.
Jupiter with Io and Europa1141 viewsJupiter was at opposition on Feb 6, 2015. In this image Jupiter is framed by its moon Io (L) and Europa (R). Jupiter975 viewsOn 1/23/2015 the shadows of Io, Callisto, and Europa were visible from Earth as they transit across Jupiter. This photo shows Io's shadow (someone correct me if I am wrong) as it transited across the gas giant. The image consist of 2,000 video frames taken with an Imaging Source camera and a Meade 8" SCT mounted on a Celestron CGEM mount. Frames were stacked with Registax6 and processed with PhotoShop CS6 and Steve's touch.
Moon: Tyco/Clavius crater region1545 viewsAn image of the Tyco/Clavius region taken from Alamogordo. Tyco (53 miles in diameter, near center of image) is a relatively young crater based on samples from Apollo 17. Clavius (140 miles in diameter, lower center) is a much older crater with several smaller craters inside of it. Image taken using the C9.25 with a Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera and Lumicon H-alpha filter. This picture is surprisingly similiar to one in the Sep/Oct 2011 SkyNews (p.36).
