Moon: Tyco/Clavius crater region1214 viewsAn image of the Tyco/Clavius region taken from Alamogordo. Tyco (53 miles in diameter, near center of image) is a relatively young crater based on samples from Apollo 17. Clavius (140 miles in diameter, lower center) is a much older crater with several smaller craters inside of it. Image taken using the C9.25 with a Imaging Source DMK41AU02 camera and Lumicon H-alpha filter. This picture is surprisingly similiar to one in the Sep/Oct 2011 SkyNews (p.36).

A Tale of Two Stars1135 viewsHere are basic spectra from two familiar stars in the night sky. Vega's spectra is on the left and basically has weak spectral lines based mostly on the Hydrogen Balmer series. This is indicative of a fairly young, hot star. Betelgeuse's spectra is far more complex. We can see spectral lines for Barium, Calcium, Iron and Magnesium and compounds like Vandium Oxide and Titanium Oxide indicative of a star near the end of its life. Data collected with amateur equipment and processed through RSpec software.

Antares, M4 and the Rho Oph cloud1141 viewsAntares is the bright star at the lower left of the image. It is over 700 times the diameter of our Sun. Globular cluster Messier 4 is seen on the lower right. The Rho Ophiuchus cloud complex is the closest star forming region to our solar system (~430 lght years away). The cloud complex is much larger than can fit in this image. Blue reflection nebula IC 4605 seen about mid-left, and IC4603 seen middle-top are created by interstellar dust. IC 1275 region1158 viewsIC (Index Catalog) 1275 is an emission nebula located within a rich star field in the constellation Sagittarius. The red color is due to ionized hydrogen gas (HII regions) being excited by nearby stars. Image taken through a Borg 71FL and modified Canon XS DSLR (two hour exposure, stacked with Nebulosity and processed in Photoshop).

Yerkes Observatory806 viewsYerkes Observatory was established in 1897 in Williams Bay, Wisconsin and is considered the birthplace of modern astrophysics. The observatory is operated by the University of Chicago and houses a 40 inch Alvin Clark & Sons refractor telescope. The telescope remains the largest refractor in the world.

Who Needed ISON?770 viewsWhile Comet ISON evaporated while going around the Sun, Comet Lovejoy (C2013 R1) is putting on a show in our morning sky. It is visible low in the NE before sunrise. This is a 4 min exposure through a 100ED refractor at f7.2 with a modified Canon 1000D at ISO 800. The green color is most likely the result of outgassing of primarily diatomic carbon from solar heating. C2013 R1 was discovered on 9/7/2013 and will make its closest approach to the Sun on 12/22.

Saturn820 viewsSaturn taken with a Takahashi Mewlon 300 Dakin 2.4x barlow and an Imaging Source DBK21AU618 OSC camera from Mayhill NM (2600 stacked images using Registax 5.1). Saturn lies about 900 million miles from Earth. It's disk measured 17.9 arc sec at its equator (with rings 40.6")

IC443 (Jellyfish Nebula)683 viewsIC443 (Jellyfish Nebula) is the supernova remnant of a massive star that exploded thousands of years ago. The nebula is located around 5,000 light years away from Earth in the constellation of Gemini. This image consist of 80 x 5min exposures taken with a Canon 60Da camera, Orion ED80T refractor, and a Celestron CGEM mount.
