Open Cluster NGC 2264, the Cone and Fox Fur Nebula1845 viewsNGC 2264 in the Constellation Monoceros is an open cluster known as the Christmas Tree Cluster (middle and upside down). The Cone Nebula (bottom) and Fox Fur Nebula (just above and to the right of the blue reflection nebulosity) are included in the image. Total of 3 hoursrs 45 minutes exposure (modified Canon 40D, Takahashi Epsilon 180 astrograph, Images Plus 4.0, and Photoshop CS5).

Rosette Nebula1165 viewsThe Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237-8, 46) and the open cluster NGC 2244 in the center of the nebula is found in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula is one of the largest in the sky. The nebula was photographed with a Takahashi E-180 astrograph and Canon 20Da (ISO 800); Exposure was a total of 2.5 hours (30 x 300 seconds), calibrated, aligned, and stacked in Images Plus and processed in Photoshop CS4.

Rosette Nebula1212 viewsThe Rosette Nebula is a large, circular stae forming region located near one end of a giant molecular cloud in the bonstellation Monoceros. The nebula lie at a distance of ~ 5,200 light years (?) and measure ~ 130 light years in diameter. Taken with a Tak FSQ-106, SBIG STL-11000 on a Paramount. Single 30-min exposure using the Tzec Maun scope in Australia.

IC 2177 emission and the van den Bergh 93 reflection nebulosity1752 viewsIC 2177, in the constellation Monoceros, is the large red emission nebula. IC 2177 is often called the Seagull Nebula, embedded in the head of the seagull is van den Bergh 93 (slightly left of center in the image) that actually refers only to the blue reflection nebulosity. NGC 2264978 viewsNGC 2264, consist of two deep sky objects, the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster. Both located in the constellation of Monoceros. The star cluster is call the Christmas Tree while the Cone Nebula gets its name from the cone shape visible in photos. The cone nebula is a dark absorption nebula consisting of cold molecular hydrogen and dust in front of an emission nebula. The photo consist of 3.5 hours of exposure using Canon 60Da, Celestron C8, and a CGEM mount. Taken Christmas day 2013.

A Galactic Rose1081 viewsThe Rosette nebula (Sh2-275) is a large molecular cloud in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula is about 4-6 times the size of the full moon in our night sky. The cloud is mostly comprised of hydrogen gas and is illuminated from the group of hot, young stars near its center. The nebula lies some 5200 light years from the Earth. This image was taken from Alamogordo NM using a 100mm f7.2 refractor and a modified Canon 1000D (XS) DSLR.

The sweeping arc forms the seagull’s wings while the head consist of NGC 2327 (also call the Parrot nebula). This image consist of 80 x 300sec images taken with a Canon 60Da, Orion ED80T refractor, and a Celestron CGEM Mount. Stacked in Nebulosity and processed with PhotoShop CS6

Hubble's variable nebula in Monoceros871 viewsHubble's Variable Nebula (NGC 2261) is a small 2 x 4 arcminute nebula found in the constellation Monoceros. One suggestion proposed for the observed variability is due to dust clouds near R Monocerotis periodically changing the nebula's illumination. The image was a total of 6 hr 20 min exposure with a 12.5” f/9 RCOS telescope and SBIG STF8300c camera (OAG with ST-i) on a Paramount ME (19 x 1200 sec lights @-15o C; 30 darks; 128 bias; 128 flats); Software: Sky X, MaxIm DL6, PixInsight 1.8.4.1195.

NGC 2264795 viewsNGC 2264 in the constellation of Monoceros consists of the Cone Nebula and the Christmas Tree Cluster. The Cone Nebula is an H II region and a dark absorption nebula. The Christmas Tree cluster (upside down) is the open cluster above the nebula. The bright star towards the top center (S Mon) represents the center of the trunk while HD 47887 above the cone nebula, represents the top. Not officially part of NGC 2264 is the Fox Fur Nebula, the blue and red furry like area next to S Mon. 200 min total exposure.
