Eclipse of the Moon1690 viewsA series of photos of the lunar eclipse of Dec 21th showing the shadow of the earth traveling across the Moon's surface. Images taken with a 130 mm f/8 Astro-Physics refractor and a modified Canon 40D DSLR at ISO 200. Exposures varied from 1/2000 th of a second at the begining of the eclipse to 6 seconds at totality.

Although the Moon is in the Earth's full shadow, or umbra, the moon appears to be have a copper-colored glow. This coloration is due to light bent (refraction) or scattered by the Earth's atmosphere onto the Moon. Image is a 6-second exposure with a Canon 40D at ISO 200 through a 130 mm f/9 Astro-Physics refractor on a Paramount.

On May 20th the Moon passed between the Sun and the Earth at its furthest point and created an annular solar eclipse. Steve caught a beautiful image from Albuquerque. Two weeks later on the morning of June 4th, the Moon passed partially through the shadow of the Earth creating a partial lunar eclipse. Venus will transit the Sun on the afternoon of June 5th.

Mare Nectaris/Theophilus crater1278 viewsThe Sea of Nectar (Mare Nectaris) is a small lunar mare located on the eastern edge of the Moon. Theophilus is the prominent lunar impact crater that lies slightly off center of the image to the left. Theophilus is over 60 miles in diameter and is 14,000 feet deep. The small crater in Nectaris near the top of the image is Rosse and is only 7 miles across. Image taken with a 6" SCT at f20 using a DMK 41AU02 camera through a Lumicom 656 nm filter.
