M95_M96_M105.jpg
Galaxies in Leo1884 viewsMany bright and faint galaxies can be found in the Constellation Leo. The bright galaxy on the upper left is Messier 95; on the upper right is Messier 96; and in the lower right is Messier 105; next to M 105 is NGC 3389 and NGC 3371 (from top to bottom). Equipment: Takahashi E-180 f/2.8 astrograph, modified Canon 40D, Exposure 28 x 5 minute light frames, Images Plus and Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Leo_Triplet_with_tidal_trail.jpg
Leo Triplet with Tidal Trail948 viewsMessier 65, Messier 66, and NGC 3628 are commonly known as the Leo Triplet. M 65 is a spiral galaxy whose center is comprised of older yellowish stars (bottom left center of image). M 66 (top center) and NGC 3628 (top right center of image; aka the hamburger galaxy) are suggested to have had a past encounter that resulted in a faint tidal trail seen coming off the top of NGC 3628. The image was captured with a modified Canon 40D (ISO 800) and a Takahashi E180 f/2.8 astrograph on a Paramount. Total exposure time was 8 hours (48 X 10 min guided sub-exposures; 13 darks; 64 flats; 64 flat darks). Calibrated and stacked with Images Plus 5.0; processed with PixInsight 1.8 followed by final Levels and Curves adjustment in Adobe Photoshop CS6.

Barred Spiral Galaxy in Leo866 viewsNGC 2903 is a intermediate weak-barred spiral galaxy (SABbc) found in the constellation Leo. Discovered by W. Herschel in 1784, NGC 2903 is approximately 20 to 30 million light years away. Image was taken with a 12.5” f/9 RCOS telescope and a SBIG STF8300c camera with an OAG (ST-i) on a Paramount ME. Image a total of 15 hr 20 min of combined exposures taken on 12, 13 Jan and 8,9,12 Feb 2016 in Mayhill, NM (46 x 1200 sec lights @ -15 degrees C, dithered; 30 darks; 128 bias; 128 flats). Processed in PixInsight 1.8.4.1195.
