The Moon1524 viewsThe Moon, our nearest neighbor, provides a wealth of detail even in small telescopes. Indeed, as Garrett Serviss wrote regarding the distance to the moon in his book "Other Worlds" in 1901: "In consequence, of course, of its nearness, the moon is the only member of the planetary (solar) system whose principal features are visible to the naked eye." Image taken with a Astro-Physics 130 mm f/8 refractor and a Canon 20Da DSLR (11 X 1/250 second exposures at ISO 200; aligned and combined in Images Plus).

Venus transit in white light1580 viewsThis image of the Venus transit was taken in white light (compare to image on right) through a Baader solar filter. Image taken with a TeleVue 3” f/7.4 Oracle refractor using a Baader flat field Barlow to extend the focal length (approximately f/27) and a Canon 50D DSLR @ ISO 400. Three exposures of 1/400 sec were combined and processed in Image Plus 4.50 and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

Antares, M4 and the Rho Oph cloud1462 viewsAntares is the bright star at the lower left of the image. It is over 700 times the diameter of our Sun. Globular cluster Messier 4 is seen on the lower right. The Rho Ophiuchus cloud complex is the closest star forming region to our solar system (~430 lght years away). The cloud complex is much larger than can fit in this image. Blue reflection nebula IC 4605 seen about mid-left, and IC4603 seen middle-top are created by interstellar dust. Annular Eclipse of the Sun1524 viewsAnnular eclipse of the sun on May 20, 2012 between 7:33:39 – 7:38:05 pm MST (DST in effect) was photographed near Albuquerque, New Mexico in the Cibola National Forest by Sandia peak at an elevation of 6559 feet. The image was taken through Baader solar film with a Nikon D100 DSLR with a Nikon ED 70-300 lens @ 300 mm ( 1/60th second exposure at ISO 200).

Partial Lunar Eclipse 6/4/20121493 viewsOrbital dynamics of the Earth-Moon system are on display with the latest two pictures on our gallery page. On May 20th the Moon passed between the Sun and the Earth at its furthest point and created an annular solar eclipse. Steve caught a beautiful image from Albuquerque. Two weeks later on the morning of June 4th, the Moon passed partially through the shadow of the Earth creating a partial lunar eclipse. Venus will transit the Sun on the afternoon of June 5th.

Messier 151245 viewsThe globular cluster Messier 15 is found in the constellation Pegasus. Globular clusters are large typically spherical clusters of stars gavitationally bond together. Current estimates suggest M15 contains at least 450,000 solar masses with a very dense center. Image taken with a 178 mm f/9 Astro-Physics refractor and a modified Canon 50D DSLR on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (70 x 60 sec lights; 30 darks; 66 flats; Images Plus and Adobe Photoshop CS5 software).

Milky Way Over Alamogordo2034 viewsThis is a widefield image of the Milky Way taken on 4/29/11 from within the city limits of Alamogordo using a Canon T2i Rebel DSLR on a CGE mount. Visible near the center of the image is Messier 8 (M8, or the Lagoon Nebula), M20 (Trifid Nebula), rich star region M24, open clusters M21, M23 and M25. 103P/Comet Hartley 21425 viewsComet Hartley 2, officially designated 103P/Hartley, is a small periodic comet with an orbital period of 6.46 years. It was discovered in 1986. It will be the subject of a flyby by the NASA Deep Impact (EPOXI) spacecraft on November 4, 2010. This image was taken with the C9.25 @ f6.3 with a Canon T2i DSLR (2 ea. 30sec images at ISO 1600) on 10/10/10 at 8:50 PM MT (284:02:50 UT) from Alamogordo NM.

The Crescent Nebula and surrounding nebulosity1434 viewsThe Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888) is in the constellation Cygnus. The brighter portion of the surrounding nebulosity in the upper left is IC 1318, which is part of the gamma Cygnus nebulae complex. The bright star in the center of the Crescent Nebula is a Wolf-Rayet star, which are extremely luminous and hot stars that loose mass at very high rates, designated as HD 192163. The image is a total exposure of 1 hr 45 min (21 X 300 sec) taken with a Takahashi E-180 f/2.8 astrograph and Canon 20Da DSLR camera.

NGC 14991325 viewsNGC 1499, aka the California Nebula, is a diffuse nebula found in the constellation Perseus. The nebula, which is composed primarily of hydrogen gas, was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1884 using a 6-inch refractor. The image is a total exposure of 3 hours 5 min (37 x 300 sec lights) using a Takahashi E-180 astrograph and a Canon 20Da DSLR at ISO 800 (30 darks, 67 flats). Image processed using Images Plus 3.82b and Adobe Photoshop CS5.

IC 1275 region1464 viewsIC (Index Catalog) 1275 is an emission nebula located within a rich star field in the constellation Sagittarius. The red color is due to ionized hydrogen gas (HII regions) being excited by nearby stars. Image taken through a Borg 71FL and modified Canon XS DSLR (two hour exposure, stacked with Nebulosity and processed in Photoshop).

Messier 81544 viewsMessier 8 is an emission nebula and open cluster in the constellation Sagittarius. Our current understanding is that the clouds of gas and dust of M8 constitute a star forming region in our galaxy. The image is a total of 15 minutes exposure (3 X 300 sec) with a Takahashi E-180 f/2.8 astrograph and a Canon 20Da DSLR camera. Images calibrated, aligned, and stacked in Images Plus 3.82B and processed in Images Plus and Adobe Photoshop CS5.
