On close examination, the two "tadpoles" can be found "swimming in the gaseous nebula." IC 410 imaged with a Canon 20Da DSLR and Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph on a Paramount.

Helix Nebula1354 viewsThe Helix Nebula (NGC 7293), aka Helical Nebula or Sunflower Nebula, is a planetary nebula found in the constellation Aquarius. Despite it's designation as a "planetary" nebula, it has no relation to a planet. The term planetary nebula came from the "appearance as a planetary disk" in early telescopes. Planetary nebula are indeed the expelled gaseous remains of aging stars. The image is a total exposure of 1 hr 40 min (20 X 300 sec) taken with a Takahashi E-180 and Canon 20Da DSLR camera.

The Spider and the Fly1545 viewsIC 417, aka the spider, located in the constellation Auriga is the bright emission nebula in the center of the image. The smaller emission and reflection nebula NGC 1931, aka the fly, is located to the right. In the upper left-hand corner is the emission nebula IC 410. Exposure was a total of 3 hr 10 min (38 X 5 min) with a Takahashi E-180 and modified Canon 40D @ ISO 800 (30 darks, 60 flats). Image aquisition with Images Plus 4.0; Calibration, alignment, and stacking in Images Plus 3.82b.

IC 2177 is often called the Seagull Nebula, embedded in the head of the seagull is van den Bergh 93 (slightly left of center in the image) that actually refers only to the blue reflection nebulosity. More Calcium-K956 viewsThis image from Jan 17,2012 shows active regions 1401/1402 in Calcium K (393.4 nanometers) as they rotated into view. This region recently threw off a coronal mass ejection (CME) that impacted Earth's magnetic field on Jan 22, 2012 creating auroras at the northern latitudes. Crater Copernicus981 viewsCopernicus is a 93 km (57.7 miles) wide crater located in eastern Oceanus Procellarum. It is estimated to be about 800 million years old and is nearly 3.8 km (2.35 miles) deep (over twice as deep as the Grand Canyon!). Solar Upheaval952 viewsThe last few weeks have seen the emergence of several large sunspots as solar maximum peaks. Active Region 1967 is wider than the planet Jupiter and its primary dark cores are big enough to swallow Earth many times over. This image was taken in Calcium-K (393.4 nm) from Alamogordo, NM using a 90mm refractor at f20, and Lunt B1200 Cak module and Imaging Source 41AU02 camera.

The image is a Ha image, which shows the extent of the hydrogen emission in the region. The image was taken with a Takahashi CCA-250 astrograph and the QSI683wsg camera (SBIG ST-i guider) on a Paramount ME. The image is a total of 8 hours exposure (24 x 20 min lights @ -20 degrees C, dithered; 21 darks; 126 bias; 128 flats), acquired with MaxIm DL 6.07, and processed with PixInsight 1.8.3.1123 Ripley (x64). Ha filter was an 5nm bandwidth 31 mm Astrodon Gen 2 filter.

Picture is a HaRGB image taken with a Takahashi CCA-250 f/5 astrograph and a QSI683wsg camera (SBIG ST-i guider) on a Paramount ME. The Ha channel (used as Luminance) was blended with the RGB synthetic luminance (80:20, respectively) to give a more natural star color (Pixel Math). The image is a total of 11 hours exposure (24 x 20 min Ha, 3 x 20 min each R,G, and B, all binned 1x1 @ -20 degrees C, dithered;), acquired with MaxIm DL 6.07, and processed with PixInsight 1.8.3.1123 Ripley (x64). Ha filter (5nm bandwidth), R, G, and B were 31 mm Astrodon Gen2 filters.

Mercury Transit 2016724 viewsThe Mercury transit was well underway when this image was taken at 8:17 AM MT on 5/9/2016 from the AAG outreach event at Imago Dei Academy in Alamogordo, NM. The image was taken using a Stellaruve 80ED refractor with a Lunt B1200 Calcium-K module and Imaging Source 41AU02 camera. The Calcium K-line (393.4 nm) shows supergranulation in the lower chromosphere (~1200 km) along with lighter regions indicating magnetic activity. Sunspot AR2542 along with the small disk of Mercury are also visible.

An Open Cluster and Nebula in the constellation Auriga804 viewsNGC 1931 is a relatively young open cluster surrounded by emission and reflection nebulosity (Sharpless 2-237) in the constellation Auriga. Faint red hydrogen emission can be see in the region surrounding the compact cluster/nebulosity. Sharpless 2-237 shows both red hydrogen emission and blue reflection nebulosity. Image was a total of 15 hours of exposure through a Takahashi CCA250 f/5 astrograph with a QSI683wsg camera @ -20 degrees C. (Astrodon Gen 2 filters) on a Paramount ME on the nights of 23, 30 Nov and 5 Dec 2016 and 13, 18, 19 Jan 2018 in Mayhill, NM (Lum 30 x 1200 sec; Red 5 x 1200 sec; Green 5 x 1200 sec; Blue 5 x 1200 sec; with corresponding Flats, Darks, and Bias). Processed in PixInsight 1.8.5.1353 Ripley (x64). Color calibration and RGB image stretch with PixInsight's Photometric Color Calibration and Arcsinh Stretch, respectively.
