This image is through narrowband filters, where Hydrogen alpha is mapped to green (2 hr 25 min combined exposure); Oxygen, OIII, is mapped to blue (3 hr 15 min combined exposure), and Sulfur, SII, is mapped to red (5 hr 40 min combined exposure); taken with a Takahashi FSQ106ED and SBIG ST2000xm camera with Baader filters.

The Bubble Nebula in Cassiopeia998 viewsThe bubble nebula, NGC 7635, is a large emission nebula in Cassiopeia. The “bubble” is the result of a stellar wind from a massive young star, which is thought to be 10 to 40 times the mass of our sun. The image exposure time was a total of 12 hours 5 minutes (145 x 5 minutes lights; 33 darks; and 64 flats) with an Astro-Physics 130 mm f/8 refractor and SBIG ST2000xcm ccd camera on an Astro-Physcs 1200 mount.

NGC 281927 viewsNGC 281 is an emission nebula in Cassiopeia discovered in 1881 by Edward E. Barnard while he was searching for comets with a 5-inch refractor. This image, which needs more exposure time, is through narrowband Oxygen[III] and Hydrogen alpha filters. The Oxygen and Hydrogen gas is ionized by the young cluster of stars in the center (IC 1590). Imaged with a Takahashi FSQ106ED; SBIG ST2000xm; Baader Filters; Paramount.

Abell 21 is a large old planetary nebula whose emission is powered by radiation of a blue star, which can be seen in the upper 1/3 of the nebula’s image. Image taken with a Takahashi Epsilon 180 f/2.8 astrograph and a modified Canon 40D.

NGC 2024 is a H-II region containing a vast cloud of dust, and is part of the Orion B Molecular Cloud Complex. A cluster of young stars is hidden by the dark dust lane. Messier 97, the owl nebula1117 viewsMessier 97, aka the owl nebula, in Ursa Major is described in Admiral W. H. Smyth’s A Cycle of Celestial Objects (2nd Ed, 1881) as a “large planetary nebula, or globular collection of nebulous matter.” M97 has a three-shell structure; the red color of the Ha emission of the second shell is visible in the image. Image is a total of 8 hr exposure taken with an Astro-Physics 130mm f8 refractor and SBIG SR2000xcm on an AP 1200 mount (24 x 20 min lights, 30 darks, 64 flats, 64 flat darks, 64 bias) calibrated in Images Plus 5.0; color balance in PixInsight 1.8; Photoshop CS6

Messier 3950 viewsMessier 3 is a rich globular cluster found in the constellation Canes Venatici, which was discovered by Charles Messier in 1764. M3 is believed to contain over a half a million stars. The image was taken with a 130mm f/8 Astro-Physics refractor and a SBIG 2000xcm CCD camera on an Astro-Physics 1200 mount (with guiding). Total exposure was 56 minutes (28 x 120 sec lights; 34 darks; 64 flats; 64 flat darks; 64 bias).
